Essential Question: What do we need to do to create an effective program?
What is school intervention? An intervention is a deliberate process by which change is introduced into a students' thoughts, feelings and behaviors.
What is the purpose of interventions? The overall objective of an intervention is to confront a person in a non-threatening way and allow them to see their self-destructive behavior, and how it affects themselves, family and friends.
When is intervention necessary?
Academic Failure
Social Alienation
Apathy towards school
Association with violence or delinquency
Attendance issues
Grade level Immaturity
Early intervention is Key!! There are three primary reasons for intervening early with an exceptional child: to enhance the students development, to provide support and assistance before habits have formed and to maximize the student's chance for success in society.
Types of intervention:
8th grade referrals/screenings
Lab(Work with subject area teacher)
Lunchtime Academic Selective(similar to after school program HW lab)
Guided Study(After school program)
Academy(winter/summer school)
Parent/Guardian Reading
